BEST WORST MOVIE TO WORLD PREMIERE
AT 2009 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL
Documentary Examines “Troll 2” Cult Status with Humor and a Personal Touch
LOS ANGELES – February 27, 2009 - Is Troll 2 really the worst movie ever made as claimed by IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes? Or is Troll 2, as some would claim, a misunderstood masterpiece that never fails to entertain… a work of genius. On Saturday, March 14th, the 2009 SXSW Film Festival will screen the world premiere of the feature length documentary Best Worst Movie, directed and produced by the child actor from Troll 2, Michael Paul Stephenson.
In the summer of 1989, Italian director Claudio Fragrasso cast small-town dentist Dr. George Hardy and a group of unwitting Utah actors in the ultra-low budget horror film,Troll 2. Soon after the films initial release, Dr. Hardy decided he was better-suited battling tooth decay than goblins. Troll 2 became his first and last movie as he returned to his small-town Alabama dentist office, unaware of the legions of fans that would one day recognize him as a cult movie luminary.
Two decades later, Best Worst Movie, unravels the improbable, heartfelt story of this Alabama dentist-turned-cult movie icon and an Italian filmmaker who come to terms with this genuine, internationally revered cinematic failure. The result is a hilarious and tender offbeat journey and a genuine homage to lovers of bad movies and the people that create them.
“We are thrilled to have the world premiere of Best Worst Movie at the world-renowned SXSW Film Festival in Austin,” said Michael Paul Stephenson, director of Best Worst Movie. “We are excited to share our Troll 2 adventures, past and present, publicly and to do so in a city that has not only been incredibly supportive, but also plays a prominent role in our film.”
Tim League from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema said, “The Troll 2 phenomenon is as staggeringly massive as it is inexplicable, and who better to capture this than the once-unwitting star at its epicenter? Our theater, The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, was just one of many venues to be swept up by this force majeure, and we look forward to having them back to present Best Worst Movie and a special screening of Troll 2 at SXSW.”
“Michael Paul Stephenson’s Troll 2 documentary Best Worst Movie is one of the ‘must see’ titles in the 2009 SXSW Film lineup,” says Rodney Perkins, twitchfilm.net. “Enjoying Best Worst Movie is in no way contingent upon being familiar with Troll 2.”
A late night 35mm screening of Troll 2 will follow the world premiere of Best Worst Movie on Saturday, March 14 at 11:45 PM at Alamo Lamar hosted by SXSW.
